Here is an easy trick to increase your brand’s presence on the trade show floor: pass out bottles of water, customized with your logo, to other exhibitors.
Here is why it works: when you pass out branded bottles of water you come bearing gifts that everyone wants. Booth staffers always want a bottle of water around to sip on during the day. This will help break the ice with the exhibitor and position you as a friend, rather than a foe. Many of the exhibitors will leave your branded bottle of water in plain sight in their booth as they enjoy it. This will really increase your brand’s visibility on the show floor. Attendees will see your logo everywhere.
As exhibitors we are often preoccupied with how we are going to engage attendees at a trade show and pay little attention to our fellow exhibitors. When we do this we are overlooking potential business opportunities. These opportunities can be long term such as business partnerships, or short term such as increasing visibility on the show floor or talking about your company at the show.
One of the problems, however, is that breaking the ice with other exhibitors can sometimes be awkward. They see your exhibitor badge and treat you like the Plague. To them you are a time-waster at best and a sneaky competitor at worst. Even if you can get a conversation with them it will be short and shifty-eyed as they scan the floor for attendees that they believe have greater deal potential.
The water bottle trick works wonders to turn other exhibitors into allies. Yes, bottles of water are heavy and awkward, but it’s worth the inconvenience for the visibility.
